Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why Body Sugaring?  Wax vs. Sugaring

  1. An ancient Egyptian hair removal treatment that has been practiced for centuries using a combination of sugar, lemon and water to remove hair without pulling at the skin. Sugaring is often compared to waxing but aside from removing unwanted hair, that is where the comparison ends. Sugaring removes hair in the same direction of hair growth which is less painful than extracting hair in the opposite direction of growth.

Unlike Sugaring, waxing pulls the hair in the opposite direction which can cause hair breakage and produces “stubble”. The hair is known to grow back faster with this standard waxing technique. It is this action that causes irritation, rashes and ingrown hairs and proves to be quite painful.

Sugaring paste is 100% NATURAL with absolutely no chemicals or resins. It is applied with a gloved hand and therefore, there is never any “double dipping” in to the sugar pot. When sugaring, only a small amount of sugar is required to successfully remove hair from the body. This same amount of sugar is repeatedly manipulated by the hand and applied to the next area. By using this technique, we never have to dip back into the sugar pot.

Wax is full of resins and because strips and/or spatulas are used, it is likely you will risk contamination of the wax pot.

Sugar paste will never burn your delicate skin. It is lukewarm and never hot. Wax can both bruise and burn your skin. Sugar does not stick to live skin cells and therefore is gentle enough to be used on the vellus hairs of a woman’s face and other most delicate parts. Wax adheres to the skin and causes redness, pain and irritation. Sugar paste is water soluble and easy to clean up if it flicks onto clothing – it also does not allow bacteria to grow or survive. The same is not true of wax.

Q: What is the difference between Bikini, Extended Bikini and Brazilian Sugaring?

Bikini is the most conservative of the 3 services.  It refers to hair removal from the visible bikini line, approximately 2-3 finger widths on either side of the crease between your bikini region and leg.  We also remove 1-2 finger widths of hair from the top of your bikini line.

Extended Bikini is a “hybrid” between the bikini and Brazilian.  More hair, approximately 3-4 finger widths, is taken from the top, and the labia hair just a tad.

Brazilian refers to hair removal from the entire pubic region, from front to back and everything in-between.  Most women prefer to take it all off, but you have the option to leave a patch of hair at the top of the pubic area.

Q: Does Sugaring hurt?

  1. If this is your first time sugaring and you have been previously using a razor, your first treatment will be the most uncomfortable. This is due to the fact that the hair’s shaft’s bulb at the base of the hair is enlarged. The more sugaring treatments you receive from us, the easier it becomes to remove the hair because these roots will become weaker. After your very first treatment, you will notice the hair that grows back will be softer and finer. After a few months of sugaring, you will notice spots where no hair growth is present. It is here that you will witness the beginning stages of permanency through sugaring.

To ease discomfort for your first sugaring, you may take an anti-histamine, to help reduce the redness, which is caused by your histamines, a natural occurrence, when we are removing the hair.  You may also take a pain reliever prior to your appointment as well.

Q: How long should my hair be before Sugaring?

  1. Your hair must be at 1/16 of an inch. (6-10 days growth after shaving). The hair should be at least the length of a grain of rice.

Q: How long does sugaring last?

  A.  There are three separate growth cycles for your hair. Once returning to get sugared two or three times, we start getting all three-hair stages cycled out at the same time. As you continue to get sugared you will find your hair not needing to be sugared as often and you will be able to go longer periods of time between your sugaring.

Q: Will the hair grow back darker or coarser?

  A.  With sugaring, your hair will grow back thinner and many clients report a noticeable reduction of hair growth.  When choosing body sugaring as your hair removal choice, your first three appointments are the most important. It is important that your first three sugaring sessions are booked fairly close together. If you are planning to use sugaring to soften and reduce hair growth, regular sugaring treatments result in slower growth of hair, becomes less painful and in most cases, lead to permanency. Using razors or depilatory cream between appointments will interfere with the goal of diminishing your hair growth. Please exfoliate and hydrate your skin regularly between sugaring visits. Your aftercare is important for you to receive the best results from this type of hair removal. You will receive the best results if your skin is happy and healthy.

Q:  Does Body Sugaring require strips for removal?

  A. The traditional ancient art of Body Sugaring does NOT require any usage of strips. Organic Sugar Paste is rolled onto the body part of choice and flicked off in the direction of hair growth, never against which unlike waxing and will not distort the hair follicle and cause ingrown hairs. Body Sugaring is the safest most gentle alternative for hair removal on the market.

Q: Can I sugar while on my period?

  A.  You can still be sugared during this time. We ask that you come to your appointment wearing a clean feminine tampon and we can easily complete your treatment.

Q:  Can I sugar if I'm using Accutane, Retin-A, Differin, Tri-luma or Tazorac?

  1. Unfortunately, if you are using Retin-A or any other topical cream for acne on your face, we would not be able to sugar your face at all. You can, however, be sugared in other areas of your body. If you are using Accutane or have used Accutane in the past 6 months, Sugar Shack cannot treat any area of your body.
